Challenge
Legacy security awareness training was expensive, outdated, and unable to support a multilingual workforce
With over 20 years of experience managing cybersecurity for global teams, Benjamin Fellows has seen firsthand how threats have evolved. What began as obvious scams transformed into sophisticated, Al-generated phishing campaigns that convincingly mimic real communications. So, when he stepped in as Hitachi Digital's CISO, Benjamin quickly recognized that the company's legacy Security Awareness Training (SAT) platform was no longer up to the task.
The outdated platform struggled to engage employees, with modules that felt disconnected from the real-world threats they faced. "The modules asked irrelevant, dated questions and skipped over crucial points," Benjamin says. "And when they did provide key information, it was delivered in such a painfully dull way that was hard to retain."
The solution was also inflexible, lacking several essential customization capabilities. Not only did its one-size-fits-all content fail to reflect Hitachi's global workflows and leave out company-specific policies set by the legal team, but modules also couldn't be translated into all the languages spoken by the company's multinational workforce.

"We can't just expect non-native English speakers in our international offices to follow along," Benjamin explains. "Cybersecurity is a complex, high-stakes topic, and employees won't absorb it if training isn't translated accurately into their native language."
Although Hitachi Digital's SAT platform enabled some customizations, every adjustment, from full-scale language translations to minor tweaks to questions, was locked behind expensive and time-consuming upgrades. Because the cybersecurity landscape changes so quickly, these slow, static updates hindered efforts to build a security-focused culture, while also creating frustrations for admins.
To maintain compliance and mitigate risk at scale, Benjamin needed a modern solution with current, customizable content across the Hitachi team's 8 core languages. And with the company's high-visibility Security Awareness Month rapidly approaching, he needed it fast.
"This year's campaign was only a few months out, and we saw a great opportunity to set the tone for broader, year-round security awareness," Benjamin says. "But circulating the same stale lessons wasn't going to move the needle."
Benjamin initially evaluated several vendors, but Dune Security quickly rose to the top. When he saw the informative, actionable modules and endless customization possibilities, he was in.

Modern, Al-personalized security training in every language
Dune's User Adaptive Risk Management platform gave Hitachi Digital the foundation they needed to prepare their employees for modern cyber threats, just in time for Security Awareness Month.
In less than 30 days of onboarding, Dune's team helped Benjamin deploy user-friendly, cinematic-quality microtraining modules to employees across both Hitachi Digital and their subsidiary, Hitachi Digital Services. These modules, which he describes as "fresh, current, and modern," address every real-world cyber threat, from BEC attacks to remote access scams. If new threats emerge, Dune's expert-led refresh process ensures the content remains relevant and effective, keeping employees prepared for the latest risks.
Training sessions also go above and beyond general security best practices, educating users on Hitachi-specific policies. These policies include key protocols, like data handling, steps for reporting a suspected security incident, and how to handle targeted social engineering attacks. And these highly customized videos aren't just informative; they're actionable. Each video shows real phishing assets or risky behaviors in context and then breaks down the exact steps employees should take, supported by statistics and real-world examples that reinforce why the behavior matters. By combining instruction with compelling storytelling, Benjamin and the legal team ensure effortless compliance across the organization.

"Now that our security content is actually meaningful to people's day-to-day work, we've seen substantially higher engagement and comprehension across our workforce," he says.
And thanks to Dune's Al-powered translation capabilities, training modules are now available in all of the team's core languages, including Polish, Spanish, Chinese, French, and Portuguese. "Dune shipped these translations so fast and didn't miss the specifics," Benjamin explains. "Their Al even mastered Vietnamese, which is a highly nuanced language." Best of all, the team can access these translation benefits through their core subscription without costly add-ons.
Following a successful Security Awareness Month rollout, Benjamin continues to work with Dune on deeper, user-specific customizations. In fact, the team has already started generating individual risk scores based on each employee's security knowledge and role-level vulnerability. Once live, these scores will enable Benjamin to target high-risk users with tailored modules and advanced phishing simulations. Meanwhile, low-risk users will have the option to test out.

Training completion rates and employee engagement were noticeably higher during the most recent Security Awareness Month, marking a clear improvement over prior years. And broad deployment is exactly what Benjamin hopes to tackle next. "Other Hitachi subsidiaries have been watching us closely to see if we've found a workable solution," he explains. "And I'm excited to share the good news with them."
In addition to expanding the rollout and deploying individualized risk scoring, Benjamin has plans to start gamifying security awareness training. He intends to launch a system designed to reward users who successfully catch real phishing or BEC attacks. Cybersecurity is a serious issue, but as Benjamin sees it, making the process fun just may be the best defense.
